Effects of Media on the Internet.
When I think about the effects the internet has on media and the way society receives news I think to the day where I really saw first hand the way news spreads. Think of a date May 2nd 2011. This was a pretty normal day and when reading the date above many might say I have no clue what happened on said day. Let me tell you. It was the day Osama Bin Laden was killed. I found out of this news via Facebook and Reddit, not CNN, not MSNBC, or a local source of news. I began to search the web to find my own news about the event that happened not the sources above. We live in a age of instant gratification and the internet is the perfect source for that. The internet is an open source of media you can read about a story similarly to a newspaper or watch a news story similarly to the television the fact that you can have that all on a 13in screen is amazing. This does have its negative effects. Newspapers across the country are going exclusively online losing printing jobs for employees to cut costs. Radio stations are becoming more and more prevalent because expensive FCC licenses and fines do not apply to these source. When thinking more into radio, you don't turn into the radio to hear new artists you find them online on sources like band camp, tumblr or various blogs. People are not listening to the radio as much in the car turning to there smartphone to listen to music which was downloaded on the internet or pandora or spotify. In closing while the internet is a great source it has ultimately closed a lot of jobs for great industries in the past.

You are so right on target when you say that we live in a world of instant gratification. Technology has made that possible in so many ways when it comes to accessing news and information.
ReplyDeleteI am older and I still listen to the radio in the car; mostly NPR (Philadelphia has the best public radio), but, occasionally a college station or other current music station. I find most new music from my children and Pandora.
